Brain and Neurological Rehabilitation

Science has shown that the brain and nervous system are capable of healing and even regenerating after being damaged. At Mid-Atlantic Brain and Neurological Rehabilitation, in Silver Springs, MD, we provide neurological rehabilitation.

Neuroplasticity

Neurological rehabilitation is based on the concept of neuroplasticity. You may have heard about neuroplasticity before in terms of learning, but you may not know it can also help you heal from brain trauma.

Your brain is constantly forming new connections, based on the input it receives. In fact, the brain has more than 100 billion neurons. These neurons communicate and connect to each other to form the pathways that control your brain.

When you do a specific task or receive the same input over and over, the neurons associated with these stimuli grow stronger. Your brain also has the ability to create new connections. If an area of the brain is damaged, other areas of the brain may take over for some of the lost function.

Conditions Treated by Neurological Rehabilitation

Neurological rehabilitation can treat a wide variety of issues and injuries. These injuries include sports injury, neuropathy, concussions, and traumatic brain injury. In many cases, patients suitable for neurological rehabilitation have already sought traditional medical care, without getting the recovery results they wanted.

Neuroscience can also provide brain therapy for many conditions, including ADHD, dizziness, fatigue, seizures, sensory processing disorder, headaches and migraines, and PMS.

Diagnosis and Treatment

Your treatment journey will begin with a diagnosis. Testing can include meeting with an occupational therapist, postural stability screening, cognitive testing, and other neurological testing.  Videonystagmography, or VNG, and saccadometry are also used to help measure your nervous system and motor function. You'll also discuss your medical history.

Once a diagnosis is complete, your practitioner will discuss your treatment plan. Treatment will include both in-office and at-home rehabilitation for the best results. You may be directed to perform exercises a few times each day and make significant changes to your diet. As your treatment continues, your treatment plan will be evaluated and updated as needed.
